Take Two! Bird Banding in the Field with KBO

Join us on Wednesday July 10th, for a full-day immersive birding and learning experience with KBO in the stunning Upper Klamath Lake region. You will be observing bird banding up close with
KBO biologists and the KBO international interns in the morning and later venturing on a 2-3 hour bird walk (lunch is included). This is a special opportunity to meet our scientists and learn about (and support!) KBO’s international scientist-in-training program. You will also have the unique opportunity to see many resident and migratory birds up close and appreciate details you may never see in the wild. Please join us for a day of adventure and learning and support the young scientists of the future!

Come join KBO biologists and this season’s interns for a bird banding experience in the field!

This is a fundraiser for KBO’s long-standing and well-respected international field biologist training program. It is a unique opportunity to meet some of our scientists in a small group setting, learn about the science of bird banding, and see some of Oregon’s birds up close. We will observe live bird banding including mist netting and data collection and learn more about Southern Oregon’s migrating and resident birds all while in the field in the beautiful Upper Klamath Lake region. Come join us and support future scientists! Monday, June 17th, 6:30 a.m. to noon (inclusive of drive time to and from Ashland).

An Evening with KBO

Join us at the KBO office on March 15th from 5:30 pm – 7 pm, to hear three talks by the KBO staff. This will be a hybrid event, and the in-person portion will be at the KBO office at 2425 Siskiyou Blvd, Ashland, OR. This is a free event with light refreshments provided. The talks will cover Western Purple Martins, Banding Program, and Point Count Program.

These gloomy days have us at Klamath Bird Observatory (KBO) looking forward to a sunny summer. Especially during the ten days, we will spend in Brazil exploring the culture, eating local food, hiking through beautiful scenery, and learning about the native fauna. This trip not only will feel good on your skin, but it will make your heart feel good. By traveling to Brazil, you will be supporting Mantiquera Bird Observatory’s (OAMa) banding program for an entire year and KBO’s intern exchange program.

Klamath Bird Observatory is well known for its broad international reach, focusing on partnerships and capacity building across the ranges of our shared birds. KBO’s bird banding internship program has trained over 283 interns from more than 17 countries. OAMa is a fruit of this capacity-building program, which is now running its training program in Brazil. As part of the continued partnership between these two observatories, we are pleased to announce a new internship exchange program! After training in their home country, biologists will have the opportunity to visit and train at the other observatory. KBO will host a student from OAMa for three or six months each year, and OAMa will host a student from KBO for up to three months at their field station in Brazil, joining the local crew at the year-round bird monitoring on the Mantiqueira Highlands.

Meet Banding Intern Giselle Ragoonanan

Meet banding intern Giselle Lares Ragoonanan. She is an indigenous naturalist, assistant field researcher, nature soundscape recorder, and wildlife conservationist. Her home is the twin island of Trinidad and Tobago at the end of the Caribbean archipelago. KBO is very excited to have her as an intern this year and are grateful for partnerships like BirdCaribbean for helping to make it happen. Migrate South with KBO to Brazil

Join KBO for a migration south to Brazil. Brazil is known for its astonishing bird diversity, with over 1800 species registered. You will travel with local scientists and founders of Mantiqueira Bird Observatory (OAMa), Luiza Figueira and Pedro Martins, and KBO’s Director of Conservation, Jaime Stephens. OAMa has planned a 9-day immersive trip that you won’t want to miss exploring Brazil’s biodiverse cloud forests, photography workshop, and delicious Brazilian food. There is still one spot available! 

This trip is more than a memorable vacation. It is an opportunity to support bird conservation across borders. The trip fee will fund OAMa’s bird banding program for a whole year and the Bird Banders Beyond Borders intern exchange program. 

The trip is taking place on April 12th-20th, 2023. The trip fee is $5,000 and covers hotels, food, and transportation in Brazil

We are pleased to announce a new internship exchange program! Bird and Banders Beyond Borders between KBO and Mantiqueira Bird Observatory. After training in their home country, biologists will have the opportunity to visit and train at the other observatory. KBO will host a student from OAMa for three or six months each year, and OAMa will host a student from KBO for up to three months at their field station in Brazil, joining the local crew at the year-round bird monitoring on the Mantiqueira Highlands.

We are excited to share the first two interns to participate in this program, Victor Gonzalez and Otávio Rocha! 

Vacation for Conservation

Join KBO’s dynamic duo Director of Conservation Jaime Stephens and Board President Shannon Rio for a memorable 9-day trip to Brazil, April 12th – 20th, 2023. This trip will be guided by past KBO intern and co-founder of Mantiqueira Bird Observatory (OAMa) Luiza Figueira. The cost of this trip includes hotels, food (breakfast, lunch, dinner), and transportation (to and from the airport and during the trip). The total cost of the trip is $5,000, $2500 to reserve your seat, and the total amount is due by February 10th. With 12 people attending, these funds will cover a FULL YEAR of OAMa’s banding program. It will also be used to help support a student intern that is participating in KBO OAMa’s intern exchange program. 

Supporting Conservation with International Travel

Join Klamath Bird Observatory and Mantiqueira Bird Observatory (OAMa) for a 10-day exploration of Brazil to promote bird and habitat conservation beyond borders. Enjoy hiking and birding in the cloud forests of Brazil with local scientists leading the way. Time to explore a local town and enjoy Brazilian cuisine. Attend a bird photography workshop and watch OAMa science in action at their banding station.
The trip takes place April 12th – 20th, with travel to and from the U.S. extending the dates as needed on both ends. The cost is $5000 per person; this includes hotels, food (breakfast, lunch, dinner), and transportation (to and from the airport and during the trip). Hotel accommodation includes a double occupancy or single occupancy with a private bathroom. The only thing not included is airfare from the US to Brazil.
