SUMMARY:State of the Birds: An Artistic Reflection
DESCRIPTION:February 8th\, 4 pm – 6 pm\, @Luna Cafe\nLight Refreshments Provided\n$10 Adults $5 Kids\nPay for Two Adults\, Get One Kid FREE!\n \nJoin the Klamath Bird Observatory and local artist Gatore for an inspiring afternoon that blends conservation\, creativity\, and community. KBO will open the event with an engaging overview of the 2025 State of the Birds report\, which highlights both urgent challenges and hopeful pathways for bird conservation in the United States. This year’s assessment shows that one‑third of U.S. bird species now require immediate conservation action\, with steep declines across grasslands\, aridlands\, forests\, shorelines\, and even among waterfowl that had previously rebounded. These trends signal that the habitats birds—and people—depend on are rapidly disappearing\, underscoring the need for proven conservation solutions. \nFollowing the presentation\, Gatore Mukarhinda will lead a hands‑on crafting session where participants can upcycle past State of the Birds reports into creative works of art\, celebrating the stunning photography and honoring the species and habitats we strive to protect.

SUMMARY:Hummingbirds: Chasing Flowers for 1\,000 Miles!
DESCRIPTION:We all recognize the tiny\, dazzling hummingbird—but these birds are far more than just cute. Hummingbirds are extraordinary travelers\, migrating thousands of miles across North America while facing intense challenges such as predation\, habitat loss\, and a rapidly changing environment. In this talk\, we will explore what makes hummingbirds so special and different from other birds: their remarkable abilities\, their unique biology\, and the reasons they have been recognized as powerful spiritual symbols across cultures. \n\nYou can make a difference in a hummingbird’s survival. Join us to learn how to help these incredible birds—and reconnect with and care for the nature around you. \nPart 1 – February 8\, 2026\nMartín López Aguilar will share fascinating insights into the biology\, behavior\, and conservation of hummingbirds\, drawing from years of hands-on field research and outreach. You will learn how important the beautiful hummingbirds are for pollination\, how suburban gardens can support declining populations\, and how our food choices can impact their habitat and lifecycles. \nPart 2 – May 10\, 2026\nRufous hummingbird feeding taken by Frank Lospalluto.\nMartín López Aguilar will lead a talk and walk to identify hummingbirds and demonstrate how to submit your data to eBird to support community science. \nMartín López Aguilar is a professional bird bander and Project Leader at the Klamath Bird Observatory\, where he oversees the bird banding long-term monitoring program. He is an NABC Certified Trainer for passerines and near passerines. He has safely banded and handled thousands of birds in the US\, Mexico\, and Colombia\, including extensive experience with hummingbirds and more than 200 passerine species. Martín is passionate about conservation\, science communication\, and training the next generation of bird biologists. \nREGISTER HERE

SUMMARY:Season by Season: The Oak–Bird Connection
DESCRIPTION:From acorns to birdsong\, explore the cycles that shape our landscapes. \nThis October\, step into the rhythms of the natural world with an engaging journey through the seasons of an oak tree and the birds that depend on them\, led by Jaime Stephens\, KBO’s Director of Conservation. We begin in the fall\, when acorns drop in abundance and Acorn Woodpeckers\, California Scrub-Jays\, and countless other species turn oak woodlands into bustling food stores. As summer’s breeding migrants head south\, new species arrive to spend the winter\, keeping oak woodlands lively year-round. In the spring\, oak blossoms and fresh leaves unleash a surge of insects\, perfectly timed for both resident and migratory songbirds as they raise their young. By summer\, shady oak canopies provide refuge and abundant food for fledglings preparing for independence. Season after season\, oaks serve as timekeepers—synchronizing their cycles with the shifting needs of birds and people alike. \nThis presentation blends wonder and science\, exploring how oak woodlands sustain life\, the threats they face\, and the inspiring stories of restoration where oaks and birds are thriving once more. Through photos and bird songs\, you’ll discover how your own connection to oaks fits into this larger cycle—and learn simple\, meaningful actions you can take to ensure these song-filled seasons continue for generations to come. \nWHEN: October\, 16th\, 5:30 pm to 7 pm \nWHERE: This is a hybrid presentation; a Zoom link will be emailed out after registration\, or you can join us in person at the KBO Office in Ashland. \nRegistration is required\, as well as KBO’s waiver of liability \n\n
