DESCRIPTION:December can be a great time of year to enjoy raptor viewing in the picturesque Klamath Basin! Please join KBO board members Amanda Alford and Dick Ashford\, who will share their enthusiasm and knowledge during an informative (and fun!) Hawk ID workshop. \nOn December 11th\, we’ll enjoy a 6-8:30 PM lecture in the KBO “Spa” at 2425 Siskiyou Blvd\, Ashland. To ensure everyone has the best possible experience\, attendance is limited to 10. There will be an all-day outing to the Klamath Basin on December 13th. We’ll depart Ashland at 8 AM and return around 5-ish. We will carpool (a must) in 3 vehicles\, each with 4 people. \nPlease be sure to dress comfortably and bring lunch and liquids. Much of our birding will be from the roadside\, and walking will be minimal. \nEarly signup is recommended because this outing is so popular (hawks have charisma!). Your seat will be confirmed upon receipt of your non-refundable\, tax-deductible contribution of $75 per person. If you would like to be added to a waitlist\, please email Elva at ejm@klamathbird.org. \n\n\nUsing photography and the history of the land and its birds\, explore this PowerPoint presentation of one of the most amazing wildlife refuges in our backyard.  The Lower Klamath Lake part of the refuge was established in 1908 by Teddy Roosevelt.  This is the first refuge protected specifically for migratory birds.  This presentation is an invitation to visit the Refuge and will provide information on how to get there and what you might expect to see in terms of glory.  Brochures will be available.\n\n\nWhat to bring for the field trip: \n\nBinoculars (can be provided) and plenty of water\nSnacks and lunch to enjoy on the go\nWeather-appropriate clothing and sturdy walking shoes (we’ll walk slowly and not too far)\n\n\nFor the field trip\, there is a maximum of 16 people\, accommodated in 4 cars\, each with 4 passengers. SUMMARY:Scott Valley Raptor Tour
DESCRIPTION:Please join KBO board members Dick Ashford and Amanda Alford for a hawk-finding outing to beautiful Scott Valley\, CA! November should show the early signs of raptor migration in the area; we will search for newly arrived migrants\, birds just passing through\, and local residents. \nWe’ll learn about and identify the raptors we see along our route\, taking us from just north of Fort Jones south to Etna\, crisscrossing the valley as we go. The tour will be conducted at a leisurely pace with time to watch individual raptors and (hopefully) enjoy observing behavior\, such as hunting\, feeding\, and inter and intra-specific interactions. There are no guarantees (it’s a natural show)\, but Dick will have scouted the area beforehand to locate the best spots. The image above is that of a bird Dick observed south of Fort Jones. Can you guess its ID? \nPlease be sure to dress comfortably and bring lunch and liquids. Most of our birding will be done from the roadside\, and walking will be kept to a minimum. And\, as is our custom\, we will not have a formal lunch stop but will eat as the birds do – all day long! \nWe’ll depart Ashland at 8 AM and return around 5-ish. Because of the narrow farm roads\, we are limiting this trip to just 10 attendees. DESCRIPTION:From acorns to birdsong\, explore the cycles that shape our landscapes. \nThis October\, step into the rhythms of the natural world with an engaging journey through the seasons of an oak tree and the birds that depend on them\, led by Jaime Stephens\, KBO’s Director of Conservation. We begin in the fall\, when acorns drop in abundance and Acorn Woodpeckers\, California Scrub-Jays\, and countless other species turn oak woodlands into bustling food stores. As summer’s breeding migrants head south\, new species arrive to spend the winter\, keeping oak woodlands lively year-round. In the spring\, oak blossoms and fresh leaves unleash a surge of insects\, perfectly timed for both resident and migratory songbirds as they raise their young. By summer\, shady oak canopies provide refuge and abundant food for fledglings preparing for independence. Season after season\, oaks serve as timekeepers—synchronizing their cycles with the shifting needs of birds and people alike. \nThis presentation blends wonder and science\, exploring how oak woodlands sustain life\, the threats they face\, and the inspiring stories of restoration where oaks and birds are thriving once more. SUMMARY:Hawk Watch
DESCRIPTION:For the last several years\, a small group of focused observers has taken their scopes up to the Modoc Rim to observe just a small fraction of the raptors that move through the Klamath Basin during fall migration. With a natural westerly breeze that is forced upward at the Modoc Rim\, raptors can’t help but follow the easy ride southward along that north-south escarpment. Each year\, falcons\, buteos\, eagles\, harriers\, Coopers’ and Sharp-shinned Hawks “float” past the gazers for brief looks. In between\, there is much standing\, discussing\, and observing as passerines move past\, also heading southward. \nVisiting prominent locations atop mountain ranges was a favorite of Patty Buettner. She was a dedicated biologist and was instrumental at the start of the bird banding in the Klamath Basin in the 1990s. For the last few years\, this annual Hawk Watch has been dedicated in her honor for her work with the Klamath Bird Observatory. Please support the continued efforts by Klamath Bird Observatory by donating in her honor and memory. The date for this year’s Hawk Watch will be Friday\, September 26\, from 9 to 3 pm.  \nObservers are welcome to participate. It is a long day in the sun\, so bring a hat\, sunscreen\, plenty of water\, food\, a chair\, a scope\, and binoculars. The time is spent mostly standing for long periods of time\, scanning the horizon\, looking for soaring birds in the distance. As raptors approach\, their ID is narrowed down using clues seen as they get closer. The location of the viewing area is accessed by ascending the road just N of Hagelstein Park. The road is a steep gravel road with some washboarding. At the top\, a spur road is taken to the rim where vehicles are parked. A short hike through brush\, with gear\, will take you to a location where you will spend the next six or so hours. This beautiful county park features a variety of habitats\, including conifer forests\, open grasslands\, and riparian areas\, making it a great spot for birdwatching. \nThis event is free and open to all\, although a county park day-use fee applies. We’ll be walking at an easy pace\, so please bring comfortable shoes\, dress in layers\, and don’t forget to bring water and a snack. Binoculars will be provided by Klamath Bird Observatory. SUMMARY:Adventure to Brazil
DESCRIPTION:We invite you to join the directors of Klamath Bird Observatory and Mantiqueira Bird Observatory for a 10-day adventure exploring the Atlantic Forest of southeastern Brazil. The trip will be held August 13-22\, 2025. During the trip\, you will: \n\nVisit natural landscapes and enjoying scenic places;\nHike through a diversity of habitats;\nObserve birds and wildlife in nature;\nExperience local culture;\nLearn about birds\, bird observatories\, and international conservation;\nSupport Klamath Bird Observatory and Mantiqueira Bird Observatory science-based conservation beyond borders intern exchange program\n\nKlamath Bird Observatory is well known for its broad international reach\, focusing on partnerships and capacity building across the ranges of our shared birds. KBO’s bird banding internship program has trained over 283 interns from more than 17 countries. OAMa is a fruit of this capacity-building program\, which is now running its training program in Brazil. As part of the continued partnership between these two observatories\, we are pleased to announce a new internship exchange program! After training in their home country\, biologists will have the opportunity to visit and train at the other observatory. KBO will host a student from OAMa for three or six months each year\, and OAMa will host a student from KBO for up to three months at their field station in Brazil\, joining the local crew at the year-round bird monitoring on the Mantiqueira Highlands. \nIn addition to supporting the intern exchange program\, this trip will fund OAMa’s banding station for an ENTIRE YEAR! That includes six interns and one banding coordinator. Currently\, OAMa is the only banding training program in Brazil. \nThe cost is $5750 per person\, including in-country transportation\, single-occupancy lodging\, and meals with limited alcoholic beverages – the flight to Brazil is not included. The cost with a double occupancy discount is $5250 per person. \nA $ 3\,500 deposit is required to reserve your seat. The final payment is due six months prior to departure. Both the deposit and final payment are non-refundable. A portion of the cost directly supports the intern exchange program between the two bird observatories and is tax-deductible. The maximum trip size is 12 participants; some activities will be split into smaller groups. We reserve the right to cancel the trip before March 13th if the minimum number of attendees is not met. Trip activities will include moderate walking\, sometimes on uneven trails\, and away from facilities for half to full days. \nThis event is no longer accepting new registrations. SUMMARY:“Up to the Siskiyou Crest (and Back)”: A History-and-Birding Auto Tour
DESCRIPTION:Whether you’re a newcomer to the region or an old-timer\, participate in a fun and information-filled auto tour led by historian/author Jeff LaLande and noted birders Frank Lospalluto (a KBO consultant) and Stacy Taeuber (a KBO Board member). \nLots of history: The car-pool route will include various “History Stops” (but relatively little actual walking) at such important places as Railroad Tunnel #13 (site of the infamous and tragic DeAutremont Brothers’ botched train robbery of 1923); the old Siskiyou Pass; Grouse Gap shelter (just past Mt. Ashland); the 1850s-1860s “Mountain House” stage stop; the 1846 Applegate Trail; the Hill-Dunn cemetery; and other spots — i.e.\, returning the “back way” (through the upper-most Bear Creek Valley) to Ashland by mid-afternoon. \nBirding among the wildflowers! Along the Siskiyou Crest\, we’ll hike a short stretch of the Pacific Crest Trail near Mt. Ashland. Wildflowers – lupine\, gilia\, Oregon sunshine\, corn lily\, and many other species may be in profusion\, and we will identify and enjoy as many of the flowers and trees as we can. Various raptors should be spotted\, as well as many other birds\, ranging from migrant Green Towhees along the section of the Pacific Crest Trail to Bullock’s Orioles and Acorn Woodpeckers down at Emigrant Lake’s historic Hill-Dunn cemetery. We’ll also encounter and discuss lots of fascinating geology along the way. \nNote: This event is limited to 25 people. We will travel in a car-pool “caravan” of up to personal vehicles (with up to four people in each vehicle). Bring your binoculars\, lunch\, drinking water\, or other beverages\, and your questions for Frank\, Stacy\, and Jeff. And feel free to share your knowledge about what we see! \nWhen: Sunday\, July 13\, 8:30 AM. (We will be back in Ashland by no later than 4:30 and likely well before that.) \nWhere: Meet at the Rite Aid parking area (off Ashland Street\, past Tolman Creek Rd) in the lot’s northeast corner. (Car-pooling will be necessary to keep the group to as few vehicles as possible.) \nMinimum donation: $50 per person
