Put your stamp on conservation!
Each year, Klamath Bird Observatory offers a Conservation Stamp Set for purchase with proceeds supporting both national and regional conservation efforts. The 2023-24 two-stamp set includes:
- The Federal Migratory Bird Hunting and Conservation Stamp (the Duck Stamp), and
- KBO’s Conservation Science Stamp.
The Federal Duck Stamp is among the most successful conservation tools ever created. Duck Stamp sales contribute directly to habitat conservation in our National Wildlife Refuges. KBO’s Conservation Science Stamp builds on this success by bringing additional support and attention to our science-driven conservation efforts.
Klamath Bird Observatory has partnered with artists to create an annual Conservation Science Stamp for many years. This stamp is sold with the Federal Duck Stamp to support ALL of bird conservation. The funds from the Conservation Science Stamp support KBO’s mission – advancing bird and habitat conservation through science, education, and partnerships. This year’s stamp highlights the yellow-breasted chat, Icteria virens. We picked this iconic KBO bird to celebrate World Migratory Bird Day (WMBD). This year’s theme focuses on Water: Sustaining Bird Life. Migratory birds rely on water and its associated habitats—lakes, rivers, streams, ponds, swamps, marshes, and coastal wetlands—for breeding, resting, refueling during migration, and wintering. Yet increasing human demand for water, climate change, pollution, and other factors threaten these precious aquatic ecosystems. Headlines worldwide are sounding alarm: 35 percent of the world’s wetlands, critical to migratory birds, have been lost in the last 50 years. In Southern Oregon, we have seen drought and fire and the negative impacts these have had on birds associated with water.

The Artists
Conservation Science Stamp
I am a video colorist by trade and a nature illustrator/bird enthusiast during all other hours. By bridging these different interests, I create art that explores the vibrant, dynamic patterns and palettes within our natural world. I am also a co-lead for the Feminist Bird Club Portland chapter, which is an amazing organization that builds community through birding and celebrates the vision that birding is for everyone! Join us and help advocate for change in both the environment and social justice.

Federal Duck Stamp
Joseph Hautman is an American painter residing in Plymouth, Minnesota. The artist is best known for his realism wildlife art, particularly the US Federal Duck Stamp. The artist holds a Ph.D. in Physics from the University of Michigan and has featured his artwork on the 2016, 2012, 2008, 2002, and 1992 Federal Duck Stamps, raising millions for conservation.
