Monitoring the Night Sky

Monitoring the Night SkyORSC 20080609
Though many of us wake up early with the sun to catch the first glimpse of migratory birds moving through the area, a lot of those birds were even more active a few hours prior. Klamath Bird Observatory and U.S Forest Service’s Redwood Sciences Laboratory are taking an exciting new approach in monitoring migrating bird activity at night. Attached to their facilities are white buckets known as nocturnal bioacoustics monitoring devices (i.e. microphones), in place to capture the sounds of migrating birds moving through, on their way to their southern wintering grounds. At the Humboldt Bay Bird Observatory more than one bird per second was recorded flying over during a fall evening.
