Banding Station Visits Fall 2018

Klamath Bird Observatory is offering public visits to our bird banding station near Fort Klamath in the Upper Klamath Lake area. The banding station is scheduled on Monday mornings through mid-October. Individual, family, and group visits can be arranged by emailing KBO’s Banding Program Coordinator Bob Frey (see below).

Situated along Sevenmile Creek within Fremont-Winema National Forest, this banding station has been operated each year during the nesting and fall migration seasons since 1997—one of the longest running bird monitoring sites in the region. In the fall, many songbird species migrate through the Klamath Basin and can be encountered here. The location is also a birding hotspot on the Klamath Basin Birding Trail.

Also, KBO and Crater Lake National Park continue our bird ecology program series into the fall. These Ranger-led programs begin at the Park’s Steel Visitor Center and feature a visit to KBO’s banding station within Crater Lake National Park. The programs are scheduled on Thursday mornings—please check the Crater Lake National Park series flyer (see below) for upcoming dates and more details.

2018 KBO Banding Workshop a Fun Success!

KBO hosted the 2018 Fundamentals of Bird Banding Workshop at our Upper Klamath Lake Field Station August 6-10. Biologists from near and far—California, Idaho, Nevada, Oregon, Nicaragua, the Marianas Islands, and Spain (!)—joined KBO’s banding team for four days of interactive hands-on instruction and afternoon seminars. Topics ranged from safe mist net use in capturing small birds to age- and sex-determination techniques in this the North American Banding Council-sanctioned training workshop. The fantastic group took the “work” out of workshop and made it all a lot of fun! Most of the group now bring new knowledge and sharpened skills to their ongoing banding projects.

Proceeds from the workshop help fund our long-term monitoring and student volunteer internship programs. KBO has hosted bird banding workshops at our Upper Klamath Lake Field Station for over 20 years—an important component of our professional education program.

Ecology of the Birds of Crater Lake National Park Program Series Announced

Crater Lake National Park and Klamath Bird Observatory will present a bird ecology program series this summer and into the fall. These park ranger-led programs will feature a visit to KBO’s bird monitoring station within Crater Lake National Park.

The programs will be on Thursdays, but not every Thursday—please check the Crater Lake bird banding visit flyer for scheduled dates. The first program is next Thursday June 28!

KBO’s Fundamentals of Songbird Banding Workshop is filling up—register soon!

Just a few spots are still open for KBO’s Fundamentals of Songbird Banding Workshop August 6-10, 2018 at our Upper Klamath Field Station. This is a North American Banding Council-approved training session with NABC-based content and NABC-certified Trainer instructors. All registration fees go directly to funding our long-term monitoring and banding training program. Registration closes July 20, 2018.

Participants will receive training in bird safety, bird handling, mist net use and maintenance, data collection, bird identification, bird banding, and sexing and ageing techniques through both hands-on instruction while capturing birds and numerous seminars. The workshop program has been developed for people with little or no bird handling and banding experience, although is also appropriate for those with intermediate skills for which it will build upon their existing skills and knowledge.

The registration fee is $1,600 per person and is non-refundable. Registration includes all meals (including beverages and snacks) beginning with dinner Monday August 6 and ending with lunch Friday August 10. Space is available for free tent camping at KBO’s rustic Upper Klamath Field Station. There is lodging available nearby at several Rocky Point area resorts and lodges (all with rooms and/or cabins as well as RV and tent camping) and a few options on Airbnb (search Rocky Point or Klamath Falls, Oregon). A little further away are Running Y Ranch Resort (about 20 minute drive) and hotels in Klamath Falls (about 40 minutes).

KBO Banding Demonstration at Rogue Valley Bird Day this Saturday

Spring is here and so are the birds! Join Klamath Bird Observatory biologists at their bird banding demonstration this Saturday—just one of the many family friendly activities of the Rogue Valley Bird Day at Ashland’s North Mountain Park. The City of Ashland Department of Parks and Recreation with many partners will again host the Rogue Valley Bird Day festival May 13. The festival is our local celebration of International Migratory Bird Day. The event will feature expert-guided bird walks, thrilling programs featuring birds of prey by Wildlife Images Education Rehabilitation Center, our bird banding demonstration, and the ever very-popular bird calling contest! In 2017, International Migratory Bird Day theme is “Helping Them on Their Way”—focusing on the importance of migration stopover as a critical facet of migratory birds’ life cycle. Migration stopover refers to the “rest stops” birds make in their long and uncertain journeys each year. The stopover rest stops are essential for refueling after one leg of the journey and before the next. Participants at more than 700 local celebrations from Argentina to Canada and the Caribbean will learn their home is shared, sometimes briefly, by feathered world travelers.

The 2017 International Migratory Bird Day Stopover Sites poster artwork illustrates 11 long-distance migratory bird species in a various stopover spots of their amazing annual round trips. It serves as a reminder that we all can help them on their way no matter where we are.

Now in its 27th year, International Migratory Bird Day has grown from a one-day event into a framework underpinning hundreds of projects and programs year-round. It is coordinated by Environment for the Americas, which provides bilingual educational materials and information about birds and bird conservation throughout the Americas. Their programs inspire children and adults to get outdoors, learn about birds, and take part in their conservation.

Songbird Banding Workshop Registration Deadline Extended

The registration deadline has been extended for Klamath Bird Observatory’s August 22-26 Fundamentals of Songbird Banding Workshop – now July 29. Registration fees contribute directly to funding our long-term monitoring and banding training program. This is an introductory course and participants will be exposed to the fundamental skills and knowledge that serve as the foundation for becoming a skilled bird bander. This workshop is designed for undergraduates, graduate students, bird observatory volunteers, naturalists, and others interested in learning more about bird monitoring and conservation science. The course is particularly suitable for those interested in pursuing careers in ornithology or assisting at bird banding stations. Klamath Bird Observatory is hosting a bird banding demonstration at our Sevenmile Guard Station long-term monitoring site (on Fremont-Winema National Forest) Monday August 1st. KBO biologists will be conducting bird banding and sharing captured birds and the valuable information they provide before their release.

The Sevenmile Guard Station site is one of the longest continuously operated bird monitoring stations in the region, established in 1996. Recently-fledged thrushes, sparrows, and warblers can be expected as well as early-migrating individuals of almost anything!
