SAN PANCHO BIRD OBSERVATORY, DIRECTOR

Luis Morales bio (72ppi 4x)
Luis is a marine biologist with training in coral reef ecology who decided that birds were better elements of nature to connect people with nature. He has over 20 years of experience guiding nature tours and the last 12 years mostly birdwatching trips. Luis is currently the Director and co-founder of the San Pancho Bird Observatory, a conservation initiative born within the Western Working Group of Partners in Flight (PIF) in 2011.

Josée Rousseau, PhD Candidate

Point Blue Conservation Science’s Sierra Nevada team

Josee Rousseau bio (72ppi 4x)
Josée’s partnership with KBO began in 2004 after graduating from McGill University in Montreal, Canada. Starting as an intern for the Redwood Sciences Laboratory, her position led her to become the Humboldt Bay Bird Observatory Program Manager under the KBO umbrella.

She is a certified North American Banding Council (NABC) Trainer and holds a GIS and Remote Sensing Certificate from Humboldt State University, California.

Her expertise in GIS and database management allowed her to participate in several projects from archiving banding and point count data into the Avian Knowledge Network, to mapping offshore bird surveys and estimating their density. She also participated in several projects for the Western Hummingbird Partnership.

In 2015, Josée pursued a PhD at Oregon State University’s College of Forestry, where she studied large-scale, year-round relationships between birds and their habitats. She then completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, assessing the role of birds as indicators of pollinators.

Josée now works as an ecologist with Point Blue Conservation Science’s Sierra Nevada team. Her work continues to focus on studying bird population dynamics across landscapes and their interactions with the environment, with the ultimate goal of improving conservation outcomes.

UNIVERSITY of BRITISH COLUMBIA

Kristen Mancuso bio (72ppi 4x)
Kristen Mancuso is a Ph.D. Candidate at the University of British Columbia Okanagan and in partnership with Environment and Climate Change Canada. Her project aims to learn more about the migration ecology of the Yellow-breasted Chat and Gray Catbird. She is using geolocators, GPS tags, and hydrogen stable isotopes to link birds between summer breeding sites to overwintering sites. Kristen is also analyzing Yellow-breasted Chat feathers to assess stress levels and mercury contamination.
